PRACTICAL PREPAREDNESS GUIDE

Emergency water storage and purification basics.

Understand what to keep ready and why a water container is not the same as safe drinking water.

Stored drinking water

Choose drinking water with clear labelling, appropriate storage instructions and an understood expiry or rotation schedule. Keep it in conditions recommended by the supplier.

Containers and jerry cans

An empty container is useful for transporting or storing water, but it does not make the water safe to drink. Choose containers explicitly suitable for food or drinking water, clean them as directed and avoid using vessels previously used for fuel or chemicals.

Filters and purification

Filters, disinfectants and purifiers have different capabilities. A product designed to remove sediment is not automatically suitable for removing pathogens or chemical contamination. Read the manufacturer's verified claims and instructions.
