PRACTICAL PREPAREDNESS GUIDE
How to choose vegetarian emergency food.
Compare meal energy, pack size, preparation, allergens and storage life before choosing a food reserve.
Look beyond the headline serving count
A pack described as having several servings does not necessarily provide enough energy for a full day's food. Compare calories, portion weights and the balance of meals, and consider the needs of each person.
Check the preparation method
Freeze-dried and dehydrated meals often require clean water and sometimes heat. Ready-to-eat food avoids this requirement, though individual products differ. A varied reserve may be more useful than relying on one food format.
Check vegetarian and vegan labels
Read ingredients and allergen information supplied by the manufacturer. Vegetarian and vegan claims must be verified for the exact product, not inferred from its name or photography.
Plan for storage and rotation
Keep products according to their specific storage instructions. Consider both the advertised shelf life from manufacture and the minimum remaining life when delivered.
