PRACTICAL PREPAREDNESS GUIDE

Backup power: batteries, solar charging and generators.

Understand the differences between rechargeable battery stations and fuel-powered generators.

Start with the appliances that matter

List what must remain powered, its running wattage and any extra power needed at startup. Check the manufacturer's specifications and the runtime your situation requires.

Consider a battery power station

A rechargeable power station can support smaller loads and avoids combustion exhaust during operation. Compare usable capacity, output limits, recharge time, solar compatibility and battery type.

Combustion generators require special precautions

Diesel and petrol generators emit potentially fatal carbon monoxide. Never operate one inside a home, garage, tent or enclosed space. Position it outdoors away from openings and follow manufacturer clearances.

A qualified electrician must assess any connection to a household electrical installation. Do not connect a generator to a building by feeding electricity into an ordinary socket.

Plan fuel, noise and maintenance

Where fuel is involved, check local rules, safe storage, courier restrictions and maintenance needs. Select equipment based on actual use rather than simply buying the highest advertised output.
